Clara retrieved a heavy crowbar from her car, her hands trembling as she approached the chest. The padlock was thick, but the brass latch holding it had been weakened by years of moisture.

She wedged the crowbar underneath the loop, using her knee for leverage, and pushed with every ounce of strength left in her exhausted body. Metal shrieked against metal.
